                Politics is the lifeline through which social systems exist. There are many aspects to the process of governance which necessitates the political stability of a state. Nations have evolved into democratic and autocratic systems of rule! Throughout history, man has tried to bring structural changes to the environment which he inhabits. The basis of any system functioning in a nation-state is strong political processes and institutions which preserve the ideals, thoughts and rights of its citizens. The aspect of politics has many strands which encompass the larger objectives and policies that are detrimental to the growth of a nation. Indian democracy has also evolved and there have been many changes in policies, and new institutions which have been formed over the years.

              The study of politics and the instruments of policy and law have their own role that defines society. Policy studies and development goals do have an important place in the identity of a nation. A sound debate and discussion on national and international affairs require a healthy political discourse. Indian politics has its pulls and pushes which gives way for new ideas to emerge, creating new discussions on the political affairs of the state. Many from across various professions and disciplines contribute to the political process of a nation. Television debates, newspapers, radio channels and podcasts all have viewership with regards to the political affairs of a nation. However, what is political analysis? What does it take to be a good analyst of policy and development? Can anybody become a political analyst?

There are some things to keep in mind-

  • To become an expert at politics and public policy, one needs to have a sound understanding of the political environment in a nation, the institutions, an understanding of the constitution of India, the policies and perspectives that drive governance, a broad understanding of history and sociology, and most importantly a passion towards the subject.
  • The scope of politics is wide and people do take an active interest in policy matters which drives the nation ahead on the path of growth and development. Political scientists and political analysts research and analyze trends and issues that do have an impact on the larger objectives of nation-building.
  • There are many who analyze various components of public policy. A political analyst uses his understanding, expertise and knowledge and also analyzes the prevailing conditions of a nation by giving his opinion and analysis. They critically analyze trends, policies, elections and other topical issues which are existent in a country. Many a time, even foreign policy discussions take the limelight in popular media debates. The understanding of international treaties and agreements only add to the depth of reportage in the media.
  • To be a good political analyst one needs to have a good educational background. Journalists, academicians, bureaucrats, experts from various institutions and even think-tanks have many experts giving their analysis in the mass media. Since politics is multi-faceted, there needs to be new discussions and debates that can give fresh insight into the political discourse of a nation.
  • Many governments have representatives as political analysts who give their opinion on matters of national importance. However, there are also many analysts in India from various institutions who give their analysis from time to time on various platforms.
  • The mass media does have columnists, anchors and editors who have a huge role to play in influencing public opinion, also in favour of the party line. Many of them are known to be influential in political debates and have a reputation for being privy to the government’s inner plans. Advertisers too have a huge role to play in facilitating the analysis on behalf of many political parties through advertising power. There are also sectoral experts on economics, security and defence, foreign policy, development and finance who provide analysis on many areas.
  • However, one can make a mark in the local, regional and national level by specializing in specific areas. There are also many who join politics and contribute on the side through commentary in newspapers.
  • Today, not many like to join politics because people perceive it to be dirty and corrupt. However, many feel that they do want to contribute to the political process. A political analyst needs to be a scholar who passionately studies various issues and who can provide fresh insight into the world of political affairs.
  • A good educational background from the humanities, constant reading of newspapers, keeping pace with both theoretical and practical knowledge of the issues definitely helps. There have been many exceptions to people who haven’t had a background in humanities, but many of them turn out to be exceptional political analysts. The key is for one to be dedicated and honest in their work.
  • Unlike before, today we have various job opportunities and the internet has democratized information which can be shared easily. There is a two-way flow between the sender and the receiver. This enables greater transparency and credibility for new talent who wish to give their views on issues. The social media landscape has opened up a new paradigm which connects people to the elected representatives. Political communication is more effective than before.
